UK unions calls time on offshoring

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is calling on the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to carry out a proper investigation into the impact of offshoring on British jobs.
Offshoring is the practice of moving call centres and other business support functions abroad to save money.
The DTI should provide best practice advice for businesses considering such a move. These guidelines should include: presenting a proper business case to justify the move; fully consulting staff and unions; guaranteeing no compulsory redundancies; guaranteeing retraining and redeployment for staff affected; and ensuring decent pay and conditions for workers in developing countries.
The TUC estimates that between 150,000 and 750,000 UK service jobs could be vulnerable to the business trend. ®
