Sun Microsystems, which announced 3,300 job losses last week, is making fewer than 50 people redundant in Scotland.

The 800 workers at Sun's Linlithgow plant will hear their fate today but Hugh Aitken, Sun's European boss, said he hoped the impact would be "minimal, hopefully below 50", according to The Scotsman. The paper believes most jobs will go in sales, marketing and administration.

Sun UK had no comment to make on job losses.

Sun Microsystems employs 35,000 people worldwide and 3,710 people in 14 offices in the UK. If job cuts are evenly distributed across territories then more than 330 jobs could be at risk in the UK.

Last month Sun announced it was closing branches in Bristol and Cambridge. No job losses that time - workers who used the satillite offices were told they could work from home. ®
