OpenOffice.org, Sun’s open source office software package, is now available in Welsh from Meddal.com. The package includes a word processor, spreadsheet, drawing and presentations package, and a Welsh language spell checker.
A group of Welsh language enthusiasts has joined forces to do the bulk of the translation in their spare time. They say that this is the first complete office environment available in Welsh. The spell checker, however, was funded by the Welsh Language Board and developed by the e-Welsh unit at Canolfan Bedwyr, University Of Wales.
The software is available as a free download, or for those without high speed Net access, it is also available by post on a CD-ROM for a fiver. The disc also includes Welsh language versions of Mozilla, and To Bach, a freeware accent creator from Draig Technology. ®
