Labour MP Brian Donohoe has written to the boss of O2 concerning allegations that the mobilephoneco has been overcharging its punters.

According to the The Mail on Sunday, the MP for Cunninghame South has been contacted by a number of people who claim they've been ripped off by the mobile operator.

In a letter to O2 boss Peter Erskine, Mr Donohoe says he is writing "with great concern that you are overcharging customers for call charges due to simple miscalculation errors by your computer system."

Said Mr Donohoe: "I have been contacted by one customer who has just found that they have been overcharged for at least nine months in the last year, and I am appealing for more customers to check their bills and come forward if they find a similar pattern. In one case a customer was charged almost £10 more a month than they should have been."

Indeed, The Register has received a number of emails from readers who also claim they have been wrongly billed by O2. In many cases punters have been charged for calls that were supposed to have been included in their call plans.

No one from O2, which has more than 13m customers in the UK, was available for comment at the time of writing. However, last week a spokesman for O2 denied that the company had overcharged customers.

"O2's billing processes are regularly audited by independent third parties and overseen by the industry regulator. O2's billing accuracy is within industry standards and there has never been any evidence or concern that millions of customers might be overcharged," he said. ®
