UK 3G network 3 today launched what it claims is Europe's "smallest and lightest 3G handset", the NEC 338.

Available in glossy black and silver, this clamshell handset weighs only 114g and measures 9.4 x 4.7 x 2.3cm. The phone allows customers to access the full range of 3's services including live person-to person video calls, multimedia downloads and video messaging. The integrated camera swivels around to grab video or stills, and incorporates a 2x digital zoom and timer. Images are displayed on a 2in, 172 x 220, 65,535-colour display.

The 338 is dual-mode - 2.5G and 3G. There's 17MB of memory. According to 3, the handset offers a total talk time of 200 minutes, a video call time of 130 minutes and 116 hours on stand-by.

The NEC 338 is currently available only on contract, with handset prices starting at nothing at all. It goes on sale today across the UK in over 7000 shops that stock 3 products and services, the network said. ®
