Intel pushes out low end Grantsdales

No fanfare for new 915 chipsets

Intel has quietly extended its 'Grantsdale' Pentium 4 chipset family with a pair of low-end products, as anticipated.

Neither the 915PL nor the 915GL have been formally announced so far as we can see, but the pair have now appeared on the chip maker's website among the list of 915-series chipsets.

The 915PL is a discrete chipset; the 915GL integrates Intel's Media Graphics Accelerator 900 DirectX 9 engine. Both support a 533MHz or 800MHz frontside bus, HyperThreading-enabled CPUs, PCI Express expansion and a dual-channel memory bus.

Unlike previous Grantsdale parts, however, the new chipsets only support DDR SDRAM, not DDR 2 memory. The 915PL supports only a single DIMM per memory channel, whereas the 915GL supports two DIMMs per channel. The two chipsets can handle up to 2GB and 4GB, respectively.

Both parts can connect up to any Intel ICH6 or ICH6R South Bridge chip, which adds four PCI Express x1 lines, four Serial ATA ports (with RAID on the ICH6R), Gigabit Ethernet, eight USB 2.0 ports and HD Audio. ®
