Sharp today announced that it would in August roll out the world's biggest LCD TV* - a whopping 65 inches for an equally whopping $15,500 (roughly £8,500).

The beast will intially be available in Japan, and overseas by the end of the year, Reuters reports. The press conference for the launch was reportedly packed to the gunwales with tech-hungry hacks as the company also revealed sets ranging from 22 to 45 inches with an "advanced backlight for improved color production".

Sharp reckons its 65-inch TV is superior to equivalent plasma displays because it can produce an image with resolution of 1,920 horizontal by 1,080 vertical pixels. Rival Matsushita's 65-inch set, by comparison, produces a paltry 1,366 by 768 pixels of resolution.

And that's what the 65-inch übertelly is really all about - getting the company in the papers at the expense of its rivals while proving that it has the technological nouse to go bigger and better. Indeed, Sharp says it will only produce 300 65-inch TVs per month, so you'd better get those orders in now. ®
