Telecoms workers in Pakistan have gone on strike in protest at the impending privatisation of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL).
Union officials claim as many as 250 workers have been banged up after the Government's announcement on Saturday of plans to flog a controlling 26 per cent stake in the telco.
Troops have also been stationed to safeguard key PTCL installations.
The President of PTCL, Junaid Iqbal Khan, said that the entire system of the company was "functioning smoothly and uninterrupted" despite the strike action.
He added that police and rangers have been deployed at all PTCL installations "to provide security and working environment to the employees".
Union officials have threatened to disrupt the network unless the Government withdraws plans to privatise the business, reports AFX. ®
