Iomega blesses second-generation Rev drive

Doubles capacity to 70GB

Iomega yesterday doubled the capacity of its Rev back-up system to 70GB and began shipping both 2.5in disks and drives - internal and external - worldwide.

The newly available Rev drives connect by USB or ATAPI, Iomega said, but it promised to offer Firewire and SATA versions later this year. The new drives will read and write first-generation 35GB Rev media, the company added.

The new drives are faster, offering a 30MBps maximum transfer rate to the previous generation's 25MBps throughput. Iomega also said the new drives come with a worldwide three-year warranty, compared to one year in the US and two years in Europe for the older models.

Iomega launched Rev in April 2004 as a faster, more flexible and cheaper alternative to tape back-up systems. Since then, it has also pushed the product at content creators - the TV and video industries in particular - as a removable hard drive system, the successor to its old Jaz offering.

The USB Rev 70GB drive costs $600/€499. The the ATAPI versions is priced at $580/€499. Discs cost $69/€65, or $250/€295 for a pack of four. ®
