The Open Rights Group (ORG) and the Foundation for Information Policy Research are teaming up for events to raise awareness of electronic voting.

Already commonplace in the US, electronic voting has been deeply controversial and the machines have been hacked by activists. The systems will be piloted in the UK in the May local elections.

"Electronic Voting: A challenge to democracy?" will hear from several European and US experts on 8 February at University College London (UCL).

Discussions will look at why governments are attracted to e-voting and what benefits and problems have emerged from other countries' experiences.

The events aim to spread academic and practical information about e-voting among European activists. The conference will also be offering a free screening of the HBO film Hacking Democracy on 6 February at UCL from 7pm.
