Google thwarts al-Qaeda kamikaze strike on US embassy

London consulate cunningly disguised

Google has quite brilliantly denied al-Qaeda the possibility of using Google Maps UK to identify the US embassy in London and subsequently launching a devastating kamikaze assault on the building.

Indeed, were Ozzie bin Laden to search for "US embassy London", he'd be directed here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=us+embassy&layer=&ie=UTF8&near=london&z=17&ll=51.517663,-0.133038&spn=0.003138,0.007274&t=k&om=1&iwloc=F):

The US Embassy according to Google Maps - actually a Post Office (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=us+embassy&layer=&ie=UTF8&near=london&z=17&ll=51.517663,-0.133038&spn=0.003138,0.007274&t=k&om=1&iwloc=F)

Quite what the Post Office boys down on Rathbone Place will make of Google's fingering of their building as a decoy target is anyone's guess, but they can take heart from the fact that the correct address shown will lead determined terrorists to their true objective down at Grosvenor Square (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=us+embassy&layer=&ie=UTF8&near=london&z=18&ll=51.511096,-0.153052&spn=0.001569,0.003637&t=k&om=1&iwloc=F):

The real US Embassy in Grosvenor Square as seen on Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=us+embassy&layer=&ie=UTF8&near=london&z=18&ll=51.511096,-0.153052&spn=0.001569,0.003637&t=k&om=1&iwloc=F)

Yes, we know: once again El Reg has played right into the hands of the terrorists by correctly identifying this A-list target. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. ®
