Nokia is paying Qualcomm $20m for licensing its technology for use in the second quarter of 2007.

The two companies are still arguing over their old license agreement. The payment of $20m relates to patents which Qualcomm makes available through the European Telecommunications Standardisation Institute.

Today's payment is not the end of the two companies' legal dispute. Two days ago Qualcomm filed a suit alleging Nokia had breached its GSM patents for downloading applications and digital content.

Nokia said the payment was fair and reasonable and that it believes Qualcomm's patent claims are concentrated in the US. The handset maker also said it expected Qualcomm's share of royalty payments would decrease after 9 April, when many of Qualcomm's early patents become loyalty free.
