Comments on: Councils need performance management buy-in

Best way to improve performance is to get rid of indicators

Posted Friday 22nd June 2007 07:37 GMT

When I was local Authority everyone had targets and objectives. We all knew what we had to do and afterwards whether we had done it. Along came Key Performance Indicators.

Ridiculously complicated gobbledegook. Instead of keeping the systems working whilst aiming for 100% uptime, we now had to specifically "achieve 99.xyz reliability" .

Days and weeks were wasted trying to find new ways to state the old objectives in KPI terms. Very few actually understood or welcomed the change, except for the consultants!

So installing performance indicators actually decreased performance and as far as I can tell having got out of the system, nothing has changed
