Research in Motion - the company behind the BlackBerry emailer - turned over $1.08bn in the first quarter ended 2 June 2007, an increase of 76.5 per cent on the same quarter of last year.

It shipped 2.4m BlackBerries in the quarter. Revenue from devices made up 76 per cent of the total, 16 per cent came from services, 5 per cent from software and 3 per cent from other sources.

GAAP net income was $223.2m, compared to $129m last year.

RIM is so pleased with the results that it announced a three for one stock split.

Meanwhile Palm announced figures for its fourth quarter ended 1 June 2007. Revenue was $401.3m, compared to $403m in the same period last year, and net income was $15.4m, compared to $27.2m in the fourth quarter of 2006.

Most revenue came from Smartphones - the company shipped 750,000 units in the period.

For the first quarter of 2008 Palm predicted revenues of between $355m and $365m.®
