Catherine Tate to accompany Doctor Who

Runaway bride confirmed for series four

Catherine Tate has been named as Doctor Who's new companion for the fourth series of the cult sci-fi show, reprising her role as Donna in last year's Xmas special The Runaway Bride, the BBC reports.

Donna will accompany the good Doctor for the entire series, while Freema Agyeman, who plays Martha Jones, is off to Torchwood for the first half, although she's set to return mid series. Donna was, as fans will recall, offered the chance to do a bit of light intergalactic travelling at the end of The Runaway Bride, but declined.

Russell T Davies kicked off the now-traditional Who cast announcement love-in with: "Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series. Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

Catherine Tate chipped in with: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey." ®
