What made 2007 so quintessentially... 2007? Reg Dev wants to hear from you about the news, events and software that defined the year. Also, we'd like to know what you'd like to see happen during the coming year, and - this being the IT industry - what you think will really happen.

Was it the crushing levels of hype - or the unlimited potential - surrounding Apple's iPhone, Google's Android and OpenSocial, or server virtualization in general that defined 2007? Did Microsoft actually deliver something solid with Silverlight - a relatively tiny chunk of code that slipped out with none of the attendant razzmatazz of its bigger brother, Windows Vista? Did Microsoft's claims over patents in Linux but its refusal to name names make you spit? Did SCO Group's slide into Chapter 11 really mean anything to anyone?

What of next year? Does the industry have more to do on standards and security in AJAX and Rich Internet Application (RIA) - or are these bubbles that'll burst, leaving .Net and Java in their wake? Will REST eclipse WS-* during 2008? Does Ruby need to grow up? Where does Software as a Service (SaaS) go from here? Should Microsoft buckle down on standards in the next version of Internet Explorer, and will Visual Studio 2008 or Windows Vista really matter to anybody?

Phew.
